My Labour Story

Image
So for the gory labour details, that people have been dying to know. Contractions started Saturday night at 10pm. Since I was so stir crazy for the past two weeks due to the snow I was totally psyched that this might be it. And it was. By 5am Sunday they were 5 minutes apart. I had called the BC Women’s assessment line (they tell you whether or not to come to the hospital) around 3am and they said not to come until the contractions were 5 minutes apart. I called them again at 5am, at this point during contractions I couldn’t talk and they said we should come in. So we called the ambulance (our car was stuck in the alley). When we got to the hospital I had to go through a physical assessment, basically a nurse fingers you to see how dilated your cervix is. Mine was 4cm so we didn’t get sent home. We went straight into a delivery room. It was ugly but I really wanted to have the baby so I didn’t care that Cedars wasn’t available due to understaffi...

The Best Mother's Day Ever

It just so happened that our doctor confirmed we were pregnant the Friday before Mother's Day. We were only six weeks along. Concerns of a miscarriage later rocked my world. However, at the time, there was no doubt in my mind that we were having a baby , so I really wanted to tell the folks as soon as possible. The last time I visited my mom and dad on the island, my mother was trying to persuade me to go see the doctor to figure out why at 27 I was so infertile. Ironically, I was pregnant at the time. Anyway, we had invited Donna, Spence's mom over to our house for a special Mother's Day brunch that I had prepared. After brunch, I told Donna that I wanted to get my mom on speaker phone, so I could wish her a Happy Mother's Day. The conversation went as follows; ME: Hey, Happy Mother's Day! MOM: Thanks sweetie, how are are? ME: Really good. I have a very special present for you, but you can't have it until Christmas. MOM: Huh? What? Spence and I are...

Baby or Beer Belly?

I was really excited about the little baby bump that was developing around 11 weeks. I've heard some women don't show until the 2nd trimester, but I'm 5'3". If I eat a hamburger I show. Anyway, Spence came with me to see the doctor for the results of my latest ultrasound. The visit before this one had ended with me in tears. My doctor was concerned that I may have miscarried already since a heartbeat had not been picked up at the very first ultrasound. But I hoped, prayed and thanked the Universe for a healthy happy baby, and it came true. My doctor was pleased to let us know that the baby was developing perfectly. He was so happy for us that he even showed me where my uterus currently was. I laid on the table. He pointed, "Right there, I can feel a hard little lump". I pointed at my "baby bump" no where near the spot he found the uterus, and asked, "So this isn't my baby?" He smiled and closed the door behind him. Spence f...

My Sister Nika

Spence is my husband. He's over a decade older than Nika. She likes urban guys. Her current beau is an aspiring rapper from Seattle. She loves Spence but thinks he is old, and kind of a geek. While Spence and I were still just dating, I asked Nika if I needed her to be, would she ever consider being a surrogate for me. She shrieked, "Gross, does that mean I have to fuck Spence?!"
